The Zurn Group has revived the double-knife (finger-less) mower concept, originally developed by Busatis in the 1960s.
The double-knife reciprocating design retained the low power consumption of the finger-bar mower, but was less prone to blockage and could cut heavier grass crops.
However, the arrival of the rotary mower – despite its higher power demand – led to its dominance today due to its simplicity and resistance to blocking.
Lower power requirements allow reduced tractor weight and slower cutting speeds, resulting in less disturbance in environmentally sensitive areas.
Zurn is targeting these applications with its Bio Crop system, featuring a 2.75m cutting width and an adjustable cutting height of 4–14cm.
The unit has an onboard PTO-driven hydraulic motor powering the double-blade cutter bar. It weighs 460kg and requires just 7.5hp.
