There was a good appetite for quality stock in Tuam on Monday, with lighter bullocks meeting a very good trade.

Bullocks

Bullocks weighing 350kg to 400kg averaged €2.29/kg, with a top price of €2.63/kg paid for a pair of August 2019-born Limousins weighing 372kg (€980).

In the 400kg to 500kg weight range, the average price paid was €1.95/kg, with Friesian types making €1.45/kg to €1.55/kg.

A general range for suckler-bred stock was €2.10/kg to €2.20/kg, with top-quality stock making €2.25/kg to €2.30/kg for select lots.

Bullocks weighing 500kg to 600kg averaged €2.06/kg. Angus and Hereford dairy-cross animals were making between €1.85/kg and €1.95/kg, while suckler-bred Charolais and Limousin bullocks were making around the €2.15/kg to €2.25/kg mark and as high as €2.45/kg for an April 2019-born Charolais weighing 535kg (€1,310).

There was over 20 bullocks in the 600kg+ category, with an average price of €2.03/kg.

The top price/kg was a March 2018-born Limousin weighing 700kg that made €2.19/kg (€1,530), while the top gross price was €1,640 paid for a November 2017-born Hereford weighing 770kg (€2.13/kg).

Heifers

Heifers from 350kg to 400kg averaged €2.00/kg, with dairy-cross types ranging from €1.80/kg to €1.90/kg, while better beef types were making €2.20/kg to €2.30/kg in general.

In the 400kg to 500kg weight bracket, the average price paid was €2.04/kg.

A March 2018 Friesian heifer weighing 450kg sold for €750 (€1.67/kg), while a pair of Charolais and Limousin heifers born in February and March 2019 weighed 430kg and sold for €985 (€2.29/kg).

A small entry of heifers between 500kg and 600kg averaged €2.08/kg, with good-quality continental cattle making €2.15/kg to €2.25/kg.

A January 2019-born Charolais weighing 505kg sold for €1,120 (€2.22/kg).

Numbers were also small in the 600kg+ weight range, with an average price of €2.02/kg paid. The top price was €1,610 for a March 2018-born Belgian Blue weighing 755kg (€2.13/kg).

Cows

Cow numbers were small on the day, with an average price of €1.77/kg.

A 2017-born Limousin cow weighing 710kg sold for €1,390 (€1.96/kg), while a Salers cow born the same year and weighing 810kg sold for €1,530 (€1.89/kg). A 2015-born Angus weighing 685kg sold for €1,070 (€1.56/kg).
