Having led proceedings at the British Blue Cattle Society’s show and sale at Borderway Mart, Carlisle, in January 2025, the Hartley family from Nelson in Lancashire was out in front once again this year, receiving the highest price of 17,000gns (€20,627) for Pendle Umpire.
Overall, prices were up on 2025, with 24 bulls selling to an average of £7,918 (€9,150), up over £600 on the year.
The sale leader came in the form of the first-prize winner Pendle Umpire, an April 2024 naturally born son of Hallfield Panther out of Pendle O Witchy. Dark in colour, this well-balanced bull was knocked down to Messrs Wainwright, Cupar, Fife. It was a special day for the Pendle herd and the Hartley family, as they celebrated 30 years of breeding British Blue cattle.

Making 14,000gns (€16,987) was another first-prize winner, Solway View Ussainbolt ET, a January 2024-born bull by Engin D Hontoir out of the Bedgebury Kent daughter Solway View Netty consigned by Maulscastle Farming in Annan.
This massive Blue roan bull came to auction with a distinguished pedigree, coming from a cow line which has bred bulls to 27,000gns. The buyer here was Messrs Hill based in Riding Mill.
Auchenlay
Taking the centre of the ring for the presale show was Will Sedgley of the Langstroth herd in Carnforth. For his overall champion, he went for the much-fancied Auchenlay Upbeat, a January 2024-born son of Sandyvale Jagerbomb out of Auchenlay IO from R and M Paterson, Dunblane.
Upbeat came to sale with a string of accolades to his name, including the male championship at the 2025 Royal Highland Show and was knocked down at 12,000gns (€14,560) to an undisclosed buyer.

Three bulls sold for 10,000gns (€11,555). The first, also from Messrs Paterson, was Auchenlay Utopia, a full ET brother to the champion, which went home with Messrs Sedgley, Carnforth.
Next up at 10,000gns was another bull from Messrs Hartley, Pendle UPanther, a February 2024-born son of Hallfield Panther out of Pendle Ruby, which sold to Messrs Stevenson, Girvan.
The final bull at 10,000gns was Littlebank Uncle Sam, a June 2024-born bull by Sandyvale Jagerbomb out of Littlebank Nikita consigned by the Maudsley family in Rathmell, who was secured by Messrs Scrivin and son in Skipton.
Heifers
Just four heifers found new homes on the day, averaging £4,725 (€5,460). Prices reached 6,000gns (€7,280)for the 12-month-old Solway View Valentine ET, a sparky young black and white heifer sired by the 22,000gns Topgun Splash out of Solway View Perfect.

This promising heifer had been overall junior champion at the Stars of the Future Calf Show in November and will now join Messrs Mountain in North Rigton, who also paid 5,000gns (€6,067) for the overall female champion, the 13-month-old Solway View Uaki ET sired by Solway View Dynamite out of the famous breeding cow, Solway View Kesha. Both heifers were consigned by Maulscastle Farming in Annan.
