A group of 25 NI suppliers to Strathroy Dairy in Omagh are currently trialling out a new slurry additive product on their farms.
The GasAbate system from Galway-based GlasPortBio, automatically adds a liquid additive to slurry tanks based on data captured on farm, including the amount of slurry in store and its temperature.
The company claims that methane emissions from slurry are cut by up to 80%, with ammonia reduced by up to 50%.

According to Cormac Cunningham from Strathroy, the cost of the trial is being covered by the Omagh based milk processor, although he would like to get a supermarket customer on board.
“Supermarkets ask us a lot about what we are doing around sustainability – the problem is that they usually pass the issue down the line,” he said.
