The significant price deductions being applied by beef processors over the last couple of weeks has inevitably hit the prices being paid in the marts.
There was a subdued mood around the ring at the main beef sale held in Ballymena Mart last Thursday, with 258 cattle on offer across prime cattle, fat cows and fat bulls.
Beef bullocks sold to a top price per head of £3,575 paid for a 1,090kg Charolais, followed by £3,100 for a 1,000kg Angus.
The top price per kg was the 380p/kg paid for a 710kg Limousin at £2,698.
A number of other lots sold for over 350p/kg, including a 660kg Charolais at £2,481 (376p/kg).
At the same sale in mid-February, the top priced lots were making over 400p/kg, with the main run making at least 370p/kg. Since then, prices are back by approximately 30p/kg, which equates to £210 for a 700kg animal.
Among beef cows on offer last Thursday, the top price was the £3,924 paid for an exceptional 900kg Limousin cow at 436p/kg. Good-quality lots weighing close to 700kg, sold for around 300p/kg, including a 710kg Charolais at £2,257 (318p/kg) and a 720kg Simmental at £2,217 (308p/kg). Friesian cows sold to 278p/kg for a 640kg animal at £1,779.
