The only thing hotter than the weather at the August bank holiday sheep sale at Armoy Mart was the trade.
An entry of 3,500 ewe lambs on Monday saw an average price paid of £200, which is up £65 on the same sale last year. The top price on the day was a pen of well-presented Mules exhibited by J and B Blaney from Cushendall which made £370.
The sale started with Suffolk Cheviots and the first lot in the ring came from the flock of James Delargy, with his top-priced pen making £350.
There was a solid demand for Mules, which were sold after the Suffolk Cheviots, with the best entries making over the £250 mark. Despite being well down the line, plenty of bidders stayed around the ring for a run of Suffolk and Texel-cross ewe lambs.
One of the first pens of Suffolk Mules to go under the hammer made £290, which is indicative of the steady trade throughout the day. The busy sheep sale season continues at Armoy Mart this week, with a breeding ewe and ewe lamb auction taking place today (Thursday) at 7pm.
The annual Torr sale of ewe and wether lambs takes place on Saturday from midday.
A sale is planned for Friday 5 September from 7pm, then the annual Ballyvoy sale takes place on Saturday 6 September from midday.
