Now in its third year in existence, the Irish Pig Society has brought its all-Ireland finals to the National Livestock Show.
The society, which now has a herd book of 68 pedigree pigs across 15 breeds, will see 22 pre-qualified pigs fight it out for the title of all-Ireland pig champion. These exhibitors are the society’s 47 registered members, which come from all corners of the country.
After two very successful standalone all-Irelands in Stradbally in September of the last two years, the decision was made to move it to a place with more of a crowd to gain more exposure.
Exposure
“We are delighted to come on board with Tullamore Show, which will hopefully see more exposure on the society which aims to educate people on all aspects of pigs,” noted Dermot Allen, shows director for the society.
This is the first year you cannot pre-enter the all-Ireland; instead pigs must have qualified from one of the four regional shows, which were Corrandulla, Clonakilty, Tinahely and Longford.
Stiff competition was seen throughout the qualifying campaign where a top of 26 pigs were displayed.
The final at Tullamore Show consists of seven individual classes, with the champion pig being awarded the Brian Merry perpetual trophy.
Previous winners
Previous winners of the trophy include Bill Fisher with a Duroc in 2015 and Michael Dunphy with a Tamworth in 2014.
The classes, open to all breeds, include pedigree boar, pedigree sow any age, pedigree gilt, non-pedigree boar, non-pedigree sow, non-pedigree gilt and butchers fat pig.
Sure to be highly contested also is the young handlers, which, throughout the qualifying shows, saw some of the best turnouts.
Brian Merry, a well-known middle white pig breeder from England who sponsored the all-Ireland trophy, has judged the last two finals, and this year will be no different when the multi-pig breed judge takes centre stage in Tullamore.
Sponsors
The main sponsor of the event is Roadstone Limited, which has doubled its sponsorship on last year’s levels.
“Roadstone have been with us from the start and we are exceptionally grateful for their continued support,” added Dermot.
