The Midland & Western Livestock Improvement Society held its annual fatstock show and sale last Sunday and Monday in Carrick-on-Shannon. Attendance was said to be higher than last year on both days.
On Sunday, there were 32 showing classes which saw exhibitors from 20 of the 26 counties display their livestock.
Judges and spectators spoke highly of the superb quality of stock on show. The committee said that it is deeply indebted to its loyal and generous sponsors who made the range of exhibit classes possible.
On Monday, 164 animals were sold, giving a 65% clearance rate. Overall numbers were slightly back on last year. However, the quality of stock available on the day had improved again on last year. Of the animals offered for sale, the top price of €3,400 was achieved by Oliver Walsh, Tubbercurry, for his 285kg Limousin heifer weanling. Seven bullocks with an average weight of 835kg averaged €2,150 (€2.57/kg) in the ring, while 31 heifers with an average weight of 615kg averaged €1,750 (€2.85/kg). There was solid exporter demand on the day for top quality cattle, while the main competition was seen from factory agents. We will have further details next week.
