A Lanark-type Scottish Blackface ram lamb bred by Donegal breeders Liam and Kieran Donaghy set the headlines at the recent South of Ireland Lanark Sheep Breeders fourth annual show and sale with the hammer falling at €7,000 in Roscommon Mart.
The lamb followed through on the promise shown in Tullamore Show where he was placed first in the group’s national show.
The April 2025-born lamb is out of a ewe bred by 10k Loughash 2021 and is sired by V.Fullerton 38K and suitable for the Sheep Improvement Scheme.

The Donaghy family from Clonmany had a successful sale with a full brother to the top-priced ram on the day selling for €2,200 with a pen mate also sired by V.Fullerton 38K and bred from a 7.5k Loughash ewe selling for €2,500.
While on the ram lambs, another four lambs sold from €1,350 to €1,800 with another handful from €700 to €900. There was a similar number of rams sold from €300 to €550 with about half of the 55 ram lambs entered sold at an average of €1,093.
Hogget rams
Another Donegal breeder claimed the plaudits in the hogget ram section with Charles Martin Gallagher from Lifford securing the joint top price of €3,200 on three occasions.

The breeder secured an average price of €2,960 for five rams offered with the remaining two rams selling for €3,000 and €2,200. All rams were sired by Loughash 10K (IE041615204609E).
Two other hogget rams topped the €3,000 mark. Another Donegal breeder, Kevin Robinson from Rathmullen sold an April 2024-born ram sired by Fullerton 3k for €3,000 while Leitrim breeder Thomas McGreal, Ballingleara sold a ram sired by L & K Donaghey 1.8K for the same price.
Five more rams sold from €2,000 to €2,800 (average €2,560) with Liam and Kieran Donaghy selling two rams sired by Loughash 10K for €2,800 and another for €2,200, while Bryan Barber, Grange, Co Sligo sold BB Yeats County, sired by Glenrath 4.2K, for €2,800.
A total of 16 hogget rams sold from €1,000 to €1,700 (average €1,163) with the highest number of 30 rams selling from €600 to €950 (average €748).
This left 26 rams selling from €400 to €550 with the sale providing plenty of choice for pedigree breeders and commercial farmers.
There was a clearance rate of over 82% of the 101 rams offered with an average price of €1,022.
Aged rams and ewe trade
There was a couple of fancy prices paid for aged rams. Brian Curran, Muff, Co Donegal sold an April 2022-born ram which was judged champion at Tullamore 2025 for €4,500. While Millie and Jenna Rice, Riverstown, Co Louth sold a 2022-born ram bred by Gerry Rice for €1,500.
Brian Curran also topped prics in an entry of over a dozen ewes. The top price of €1,000 was paid for a Glackmore Blackface hogget sired by 9K Fegan and sold two more hoggets for €600 each. The ewes on offer ranged from €300 to €1,000 and averaged €1,000 each.
