A new herbicide has been launched to the market covering winter wheat, winter barley, winter rye and winter triticale.
Mateno Duo, from Bayer Crop Science, contains active ingredient aclonifen and diflufenican (DFF). Its target weeds are annual meadow grass and broad-leaved weeds.
It also claims to improve control of problem grass weeds, such as sterile brome, Italian ryegrass and ryegrass.
It gives good control of broad-leaved weeds, including weeds that can be troublesome such as groundsel and common poppy.
On winter wheat, the rate is 0.7l/ha when applied pre-emergence and where there are no big grass weed issues, it can perform very well on its own.
This year, Flufenacet can still be used up to 10 December and a mix of the two should provide good control of weeds such as Italian ryegrass.
On winter barley, the rate is halved to 0.35l/ha, so the product needs to be partnered. Again, this might be flufenacet or it could be a pendimethalin-based product.
Like many residual products, Mateno Duo can bleach crops white, but this has not been shown to have an impact on yield in trials.
Rates
The rate on winter wheat and winter triticale is 0.7l/ha pre-emergence and 0.35l/ha post-emergence.
On winter barley and winter rye, the rate is 0.35l/ha pre- and post-emergence.
The product can be applied from GS0 to GS13. However, to control grass weeds, herbicides should really be applied pre-emergence.
Aclonifen
Some growers will recognise the active ingredient aclonifen from the product Emerger, which is used on beans and potatoes.
Mateno Duo is a new formulation which reports higher viscosity, increased soil binding and low mobility, which is said to work more effectively on Irish soils.
