I farm: “Just over 800ac, with around 4ac of pumpkins. We have 1,200 ewes, mostly Aberfield cross Cheviots and a few Scotch Mules. We also grow about 120ac of barley and produce hay and haylage to sell on. We also winter cattle where we take in about 350 to 400 cattle.
Staff: “It is dad and myself and we also have someone who does part-time work with us as well as Rebecca and mum.
This week: “At the moment we are flat out with pumpkins. I’m trying to get the ewes ready for the tup with bolusing and dosing. I’m also trying to get fat lambs drawn as well.

Diversifying the farm: “I stumbled across a pumpkin patch on the internet about four years ago and it’s just grown and grown from there. This year we’ll probably have over 4,000 cars in the 12 days when we are open for the Pick Your Own Pumpkin. We had about half an acre of pumpkins, then one and so on, it went up and up and now we’ve got four acres. We are about to put in four glamping pods as another bit of diversification. We are also planning on increasing the ewes up to 1,500 in the flock.
Sheep industry: “Our lambs are probably about three weeks behind, but that’s expected this year really. They are starting to shift now. As well as farming, I also work part time for Innovis in a sales role. We are a grower unit and grow on around 250 tups. We have organised two sales for Innovis so far this year. And we’re going to have a Selection Day here soon on Tuesday 6 November.
Quotable quote: “At busy times like this I would just say, it will all be fine in the end.”
