It proved an exceptional day for Sean Ryan at the Irish Limousin premier sale in Roscrea over the weekend, with his bull Sliabh Felim Mourinho selling for a whooping €11,000. The exceptional August 2017-born bull is a son of Kaprico Eravelle and out of a homebred Bavardage daughter who also sired the top-priced bull at last year’s society sale in Tullamore.

Tapped out as reserve senior champion in the pre-sale show by judge Larry Crilly, the blue rosette didn’t make a difference to successful buyer Ian Nimmo of the noted Maraiscote herd based in Scotland. Due to his easy-calving parentage, along with eye appeal, Mourinho carried with him a page of stars.

In the junior championship, Mr Crilly awarded the champion rosette to Foyle View Nintendo from Charles Duddy, Co Donegal. With a calving index of only 4.5%, the champion was knocked down to the McPadden family in Co Offaly at a price of €5,200.

Last of the male championships went the way of Bracken Nacho from Padraig Gormley, Carrigallen, Co Leitrim. This March 2018-born bull picked up the reserve junior championship and was the pick of an overseas customer at €5,600. Sired by Gerrygullinane Glen, he is out of Plumtree Deus daughter Esker-Hill Jacintha ET. Jacintha is no stranger to breeding champions, with her calf the previous year taking the reserve champion title and top price at Roscommon.

A further three bulls hit the €5,000 or more mark.

Ballinascraw McGregor which sold for €5,000. \ Alfie Shaw

Another with the same name, this time Ballinascraw McGregor, was next up selling to David Coyne at €5,000. Brought out by father and son duo John and Stephen Lynch, Ballinalee, Co Longford, McGregor has a five-star replacement index of €221, which to date is the highest Limousin replacement index recorded by ICBF. Out of the same sire as the sale-topper, Kaprico Eravelle, his pedigree also contains Ampertaine Commander and Ronick Hawk.

Two further bulls hit between the €4,000 and €5,000 mark.

First up hitting a price of €4,500 was the first-prize-winning Coraghy Maximilian ET. From the same pen as the senior champion, Maximilian’s pedigree contains Ampertaine Gigolo, Objat and Wilodge Vantastic. Securing the September 2017-born bull for their suckler herd in Cahersiveen, Co Kerry, was the O’Sullivan family. This was one of two purchases the family made on the day, with their second pick another first prize-winner, this time Newtown Newman. Brought out by Stanley Richardson, Newtowngore, Co Leitrim, the stylish Netherall Jackpot son goes back to the famous Castleview Rub. Carrying five stars on carcase weight and carcase conformation, Newman attracted a price of €4,000.

Overall male trade can be looked upon positively. While average sale price did slip back by nearly €300 on last year, it still stood at a respectable €3,372. However, the clearance rate was much improved. The percentage of bulls increased from 70% to 77%, with 18 more bulls sold than last year.
