We farm: “60ac of land in Midleton, Co Cork.”

Family: “I farm in partnership with my parents Dan and Ann.”

Cows: “We will have 120 milking cows next spring, they’re all Jersey cows.”

Turkeys: “We have 400 Bronze turkeys and have been rearing turkeys for the last 19 years. We buy in day-old chicks in June, start them off on starter feed, then move them on to grower feed and then onto coarse grains. People start ordering turkeys from 1 October and they will all be collected from the farm on 23 and 24 December.”

Organic: “We have been an organic farm since 1999. All the produce is sold through the farmers markets in Midleton and Mahon Point.”

Bottled milk: “We bottle our own milk here in our micro-dairy. We bottle raw unpasteurised milk two days a week. We bottle around 800 bottles every week. The rest of our milk goes to the Village Dairy in Carlow for liquid milk and ice cream.”

Weather: “We weren’t too badly off with the weather this year. We use a lot of red clover in our swards, so we got away a little bit longer with grass growth. We were back 2t DM/ac of grass on last year. Last year we grew 10t DM/ac.”

Travel: “ I completed a dairy herd management course in Kildalton this year. As part of it I worked on a 2,000 cow dairy farm in New Zealand. It was eye-opening. They are very efficient.”

Future: “In the next five years we will be growing cow numbers to 150 cows. I would like to take over the farm in the future.”
