I farm: “800ac up in Wicklow, in Caithness. We run 400 sheep, grow 400 acres of crops and run a contracting business. The home farm is mostly a mix of spring barley, oats and winter wheat.

This week: “I have been sub-soiling, then will be back on the plough.

20,000 Instagram followers: “I am not sure how I got so many followers. I just post a picture from my phone of what I am up to each day.

Staff: “I farm with my dad, granddad and one other guy who helps on the farm. But in the summer we take on another four or five self-employed people to help with the contracting. We are silaging out and about for most of the summer.

Tractor: “I am the main tractor driver and I have a John Deere 7280. We have always used John Deere, it’s what we are used to.

Weather: “It has been extremely wet. We usually have most of the ground ploughed by the new year, but this year we didn’t start until the middle of January and it was nearly too wet then. So we have 120ac left to plough. I used a seven-furrow Kverneland.

Global Positioning System: “We use GPS for all the jobs we can on the farm. When you use it you don’t waste as much with no overlapping for fertiliser, so it saves money. Plus at the end of the day you are not as tired.

Airport hanger: “Granddad bought an airport hangar in the 1980s. It was built for World War II. It comes in pretty handy. Currently half of it is used for storing grain and the other half for machinery.

Quoteable quote: “Mowing is my favourite job. You are just in your own little world and get on with the job. It’s always good weather when you do it too.”
