Following the ban on EU and US food imports, Russian authorities have announced they want to ban production of a number of McDonald’s burgers. The move comes after government officials claimed the fast-food giant has violated Russian legislation and put consumers at risk from dangerous meat.

Rospotrebnadzo, the body responsible for sanitation services, has filed a lawsuit against two McDonald’s restaurants with the aim of having a number of food products removed from general sale. A ban is not yet in place, but many experts are calling the move as being purely political in light of recent international relations.

Attacks on McDonald’s by Russian politicians started in early 2014 when the fast-food giant closed offices in Crimea. Industry sources estimate that if the lawsuit was successful, McDonald’s could see a drop in revenue of up to 40%, or approximately $554m per year.
