Selling and bookwork: “We sell some of our best pedigree progeny of both males and females for breeding every year but most of our cattle are sold for export between 12 and 14 months of age. We sell between three marts; Kilmallock, Sixmilebridge and Castleisland. I do all the bookwork on the farm which is very important when it comes to selling cattle. It includes registering births and keeping the health register and financial documentation up to date. I also help other neighbouring farmers with their bookwork too.”
IFA: “I am the chairperson for the Limerick IFA farm family committee. We do a lot of work with farm families within the county of Limerick. Currently there is an ongoing campaign promoting farm safety and mental health within the farming community in every county and we are doing our bit for Limerick. We are in regular contact with Pieta house, Samaritans and the HSA and we coordinate to help farmers in distress or with any issues. It may be financial, lack of fodder or simply just feeling alone. We facilitate farmers with help, advice and someone to trust in and talk to when they need it. It is very rewarding work.”
Nollaig Na Mban: “Every year on 6 January, the Limerick farm family committee host a four-course lunch which gives farming women a chance to get together and socialise after the busy Christmas period. They share their farming experiences and stories and it is a great opportunity for women in agriculture to connect. It has grown to be a very popular event which is nice to be a part of.”

Quoteable quote: “As last year was such a tough year for farmers with the fodder crisis, we found that farmers became more open to sharing their problems with others and looking for help. Many farmers were in the same boat so it was nice to see people helping others in times of need; it’s a great characteristic of today’s farming community!”
