On behalf of the Irish Farmers Journal team, I’d like to welcome you to this week’s 40-page special supplement ahead of Grass 2026, which takes place on Wednesday 29 April in Kilkenny. The event is the largest that the Irish Farmers Journal has ever undertaken, with over 100 commercial stands alongside live machinery demos on every aspect of silage making. Grass 2026 offers farmers and contractors a first-hand experience of seeing machinery in action. Demos of mowers, tedders, rowers, self-propelled forage harvesters, trailed harvesters, silage wagons, round balers, wrappers and loaders will all form part of the live presentations on the day, where farmers can get all the detail they need on silage kit.

The site itself spans 40 acres and has something for everybody involved in the silage-making business.

Machinery is big business and a huge investment for any farmer or contractor, so it’s important to get it right and to make sure that whatever kit is purchased is the right fit for your farm or business.

The Irish machinery sector is of huge importance to Ireland, with the total economic value of the sector standing at €4.76 billion.

The Irish machinery sector supports 25,000 jobs and exported to 61 countries in 2024, placing us as a leading player in the global machinery industry.

The scale of improvement in machinery capabilities has been enormous in recent decades and we’ve gone from taking days to fill pits to a matter of hours – with machinery getting bigger and better.

The sector is not without its challenges and the recent fuel price increases has placed huge pressure on contractor cashflows – with some even looking at the very survival of their business, as they grapple with cashflow shifts and increased costs in 2026.

The event promises to be a great day of demos and discussions – a welcome break for all – and a must-attend for anyone involved in the machinery sector, or looking to make quality silage in 2026.
