DEAR SIR: It is with great concern that I read in the Irish Farmers Journal that the expert group favours the closure of three of the Regional Veterinary Laboratories, including Sligo.
We were informed that the strategic location of the laboratories would be of prime importance. The location of the Sligo laboratory is perfect to service the farmers of Donegal and the western counties. It is also one of the busiest in the country.
Deputy Eamon Scanlon pointed out the importance of this laboratory during question time in the Dail. Our Taoiseach, Enda Kenny, agreed with him and promised that he would look into the matter. I heard An Taoiseach’s reply on Ocean FM radio the next morning.

This part of Ireland is and always has been the centre for producing healthier quality livestock. Should this laboratory be closed it will be further proof that farmers no longer have the support of the present Government as some farmers would have to travel approximately 250km to the next available laboratory.
