DEAR EDITOR,
I read in the Irish Farmers Journal that the suckler cow herd has increased by nearly 19,000. That is very positive news, as beef farming is important and the suckler cow herd is a major part of the beef sector.
Unfortunately, for various reasons, such as economics and the rise of other farming sectors, the suckler cow herd had declined by nearly 300,000 cattle.
There was a time a few years ago when the suckler cow herd had a positive appearance and a presence on the farming sector before all the negativity came in. The higher beef prices have brought more positivity to beef farming, which is good, as all farming enterprises are needed.
Hopefully, going into the future, the suckler cow sector can remain positive and not be pushed down a negative path again.
