The Young Farmers’ Clubs of Ulster (YFCU) Optimise agri conference, to be held on Saturday 23 January 2016 will include a workshop by veterinary surgeon Simon Doherty, the current president of the NI branch of the British Veterinary Association, and a certified cow signals trainer.

Cows send out useful information every moment of the day. You just need to know how to read the signals.

Cow signals provides a framework for vets, farmers and agricultural advisers to work together to maximise dairy cow health and welfare through observation and improved housing, feeding and management.

The concept Simon will be addressing centres around the CowSignals “diamond” – the six freedoms of the pasture: feed, water, light, air, rest and space – and ways of delivering these freedoms effectively while cattle are housed.

These can include giving every cow a soft bed and building up trust with cows and young-stock regularly, among many others.

Tickets for the event, being held in association with Massey Ferguson, are available at yfcuagriconference2015.eventbrite.co.uk.
