Farmer jailed in UK following collision involving poorly lit tractor and trailer

A farmer in the UK has been jailed for eight years after a motorcyclist was killed in a collision involving his poorly lit and overloaded trailer.

Sixty-one-year-old Philip Baker of Wonastow, Monmouth, Wales, was handed down the substantial sentence at Worcester Crown Court on Tuesday.

Baker had been drawing straw from a field before the collision with the motorcyclist occurred at close to 10pm on 11 August 2022, near Ross-on-Wye.

The 26-year-old motorcyclist, Steven Lee, collided with the back of the farmer’s trailer and died at the scene.

It is understood that the tractor and trailer did not have an amber warning beacon.

Prosecutors also argued that the trailer had faulty brakes and a lights cable held on by twine.

Officers identified the lack of the amber beacon as the main factor in the collision because it meant the victim had no warning as he approached at normal speed.
