Gardaí in Cork have arrested a man in his 30s in relation to the theft of cattle from a farm in Skibbereen, Co Cork.

He is currently being detained under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.

On Monday, gardaí from the serious crime units in Clonakilty, Bandon and Bantry, supported by the divisional search team and the Department of Agriculture, conducted a search operation in the Ballydehob area of west Cork.

This search operation was carried out as part of ongoing investigations into the theft of 18 cattle that occurred at a farm in the Lakelands area of Skibbereen, Co Cork, overnight on Monday 24 November 2025.

As a result of the searches, the 18 cattle have been found, identified and returned to the owner.

“Enquiries are ongoing at this time with the assistance of the Department of Agriculture. Investigations are ongoing,” gardaí said.

A Department spokesperson said: “This is a Garda-led investigation carried out with the assistance of the Department and the Department will not be making any further comment.”

Speaking to the Irish Farmers Journal, owner of the stolen cattle Brian Lawlor said that the Department delivered the cattle back to his farm on Monday afternoon.

“They’re in OK condition. They’re a bit shook, but they’re alright,” he said.

The cattle - 12 Friesian heifers and six Friesian bulls - are estimated to be worth €30,000.
