A proposed change in how farmers log onto DAERA online services has been dropped, a department spokesperson has confirmed.

DAERA announced last December that the existing government gateway portal would be closed from March 2019.

Farmers were advised to create a new NI Direct log-in account in a process that requires going to a DAERA Direct Office on a weekday between 10am-12.30pm or 1.30pm-4pm, with three forms of identification.

However, a department spokesperson told the Irish Farmers Journal this week that there are no longer any plans to close the existing government gateway portal.

“A new government gateway service has been launched and all DAERA online registered users, over 20,000, have now been successfully migrated across to this new service,” the spokesperson said.

The update took place in late November and requires all existing users to re-enter both their government gateway username and password the next time they try to log in. This is required even if log-in details were automatically saved on electronic devices.

Locked out

Farmers that did not take note of their username and password before the update have subsequently been locked out of DAERA online services.

To regain access, farmers need to visit a DAERA Direct Office with appropriate forms of identification.

“The ID check is an additional safeguard to protect users of online services,” the department spokesperson said.

The NI Direct portal for accessing DAERA online services is still available and sits to the left of the government gateway log-in on the department’s website. For farmers that are having issues logging in to DAERA online services, the first step should be to check that details are being entered in the correct portal.
