Comments by former European Commissioner Phil Hogan that farmers have “nothing to fear” from the Mercosur trade deal have been strongly criticised by Sinn Féin.

Sinn Féin MEP Kathleen Funchion said the comments, made by Hogan to RTÉ News, were “out of touch” with the Irish farming community.

“This deal will be disastrous for our farms, particularly beef farms. Phil Hogan is living on another planet if he thinks this won’t be detrimental to Irish agriculture.

“He talks about so-called ‘safeguards’, but fails to mention how South American farms operate under fewer regulations in comparison to Irish farms,” she added.

Hogan, who served as both agriculture and trade Commissioner, said the deal’s safeguards are “very strong” and it will benefit the dairy and grain sectors.
