National Hedgerow Week takes place from Friday 29 August to Sunday 7 September. The partnership between Teagasc and the Heritage Council aims to raise the awareness of the importance of hedges for agriculture, biodiversity and climate.

A flavour of events taking place is listed below. Events are free but registration/booking is required in many cases and can be completed at www.heritagecouncil.ie/our-work-with-others/national-hedgerow-week.

Friday 29 August: Signpost series webinar to launch National Heritage Week and featuring guest speakers Catherine Keena and Meadhbh Bolger, Heritage Council.

Saturday 30 August: Public farm walk organised by Meath County Council at Swainstown Farm in Kilmessan.

Sunday 31 August: Foraging walk hosted by Offaly County Council with wild food taking place at Syngefield Demesne, Birr, Co Ofally from 10am to 12pm.

Wednesday 3 September: Guided walk to learn about bats in their natural environment hosted by Offaly County Council. Email biodiversity@offalycoco.ie for full details.

Thursday 4 September: Hedge cutting for contractors event in Teagasc, Kildalton Agricultural College, Co Kilkenny. Hedgerow foraging walks along Dunmore Mass Path.

Friday 5 September: Webinar for hedge cutting contractors with Francis Quigley, Machinery Specialist, Teagasc.

Saturday 6 September: Guided walk with farmer and biodiversity expert Patrick Byrne and Laois County Council biosdiversity officer Lisa Doyle in Maganey, Co Laois.

Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 September: Hedgelaying demonstration and discussion with professional hedgelayer Richard Markum at Mt Briscoe House, Edenderry, Co Offaly.
