After highlighting that beef prices were dictated by market forces, and that it was impossible to guarantee even short term prices, Paul Nolan of Dawn Meats took issue with some of the target carcase specifications presented by Teagasc.
Target carcase weights, presented on Tuesday, for dairy beef systems ranged from 230 to 320kg.
Nolan pointed out that some of the targets were below what the group requests, and that there would be difficulties with the processing and marketing of such animals.
Ed O’Riordan, Teagasc Grange Enterprise Leader, rebutted Nolan’s statement by saying that their systems were based on biology and feed costs (avoiding wintering periods and utilising grazed grass) and that pushing stock further would be uneconomical, unless processors offered an incentive.
