October this year was warmer, wetter and duller than the average for the month, according to new data from Met Éireann.
The average temperature for last month across the country was 11.61°C, making it the 24th warmest October on record, but the coolest since 2020.
This average temperature is 0.82°C above the 1991-2020 long-term average (LTA) for October.
Of the top 10 warmest Octobers, four have occurred since 2001 - namely 2001, 2006, 2022 and 2013. None of the top 10 coolest Octobers have occurred since 2001.
Average rainfall of 159.2mm was recorded last month, which ranked as the 23rd wettest October in 85 years. This represents 123% of its 1991-2020 LTA.
The highest gust recorded was during storm Amy at Malin Head, Co Donegal, at 148km/h.
All weather stations recorded below-average sunshine for the month, with the number of dull days ranging from 11 days at Casement Aerodrome, Co Dublin, to 17 days at Malin Head, Co Donegal.
Highest and lowest rainfall
The highest total monthly rainfall was 198.1mm recorded at Valentia Observatory, Co Kerry, while the lowest monthly total was 68.9mm at Casement Aerodrome, Co Dublin.
The highest daily rainfall in October was 48.1mm on 2 October at Valentia Observatory.
The highest average monthly temperature across the month was 12.6°C at Sherkin Island, Co Cork, while the lowest average monthly temperature was 10.1°C at Knock Airport, Co Mayo.
The lowest air temperature was 1°C on 29 October in Athenry, Co Galway, while the highest was 19.7°C at Shannon Airport on 1 October, Pheonix Park on 3 October and Dublin Airport on 6 October.
The highest monthly sunshine hours was 75.4 at Johnstown Castle, Co Wexford, while the lowest total was 36.2 hours at Malin Head, Co Donegal.
This equates to 1.17 hours of sunshine per day in Malin Head and represents its dullest October on record.
The highest daily sunshine was 8.3 hours at Cork Airport on 4 October and Casement Aerodrome on 22 October.
