Met Éireann has issued an orange alert as Storm Ellen is set to hit Ireland on Wednesday night.

High winds, heavy rain and flooding will affect seven counties: Galway, Mayo, Clare, Cork, Kerry, Limerick and Waterford.

Storm Ellen will track over Ireland on Wednesday night and during Thursday, bringing a period of severe and potentially damaging winds.

“Associated heavy rain will also bring a risk of flooding,” Met Éireann warned.

“Due to the combination of storm surge, spring tides and onshore winds, there is a potential risk of coastal flooding.”

A yellow alert for high winds was issued for all 32 counties earlier on Tuesday.

Met Éireann issued a status yellow wind warning for the entire country from 9pm on Wednesday night 19 August until noon on Thursday 20 August.

A yellow wind warning was also been put in place for all six counties in Northern Ireland by the UK Met Office for the same period.
