Prices reported to IFA

Comment: No change in Irish pig prices for yet another week, with €1.38c/kg to €1.42c/kg buying the majority of pigs around the country. This price has prevailed since the last price drop in mid-January and there has been no change since. While stability is very much welcomed in the volatile world of producing pigmeat on a globally influenced market, stability at a price that doesn’t cover the cost of production is in no one’s interest long-term. Positive signs on the European pig price markets cooled slightly this week, with some larger slaughter houses failing to pay farmers the widely reported increases last week. Pig production levels in Ireland are once again ahead of last year, with greater efficiencies on farm, improved nutritional management and genetic improvements being continually advanced by the remaining 380 or so commercial Irish pig farmers in order to stay in business.
