Storm Ali swept across the country north of a line between Dingle and Finglas on Wednesday, leaving 186,000 homes, farms and businesses without power. In the last 24 hours, the ESB has restored power to 161,000 of them, with 25,000 now without power.

The ESB expects power to be restored to most remaining homes, farms and businesses by tonight. They have, however, urged the public to remain vigilant of fallen or low wires and to report them if spotted.

A notice posted on an ESB jeep remaining at the Ploughing site.

The company had been in attendance at the National Ploughing Championships but chose to close its stand. In a poster displayed at the Ploughing site, it said this was to redeploy all staff to restore supply to customers “as quickly and as safety as possible”.
