Producer organisations operating in the fruit and vegetable sector have received over €4m in funding, confirmed Andrew Doyle, Minister of State for Food, Forestry and Horticulture.

“These payments provide valuable support to a sector that generates a farmgate output of €370m and exports over €90m of fresh produce annually”, said Minister Doyle.

According to his Department, funding is provided to producer organisations the help to support income resilience, collaboration, protecting the environment and climate action. It also helps growers become a part of a larger supply base.

Recognition

The Minister has also announced the recognition by his department of a new horticulture organisation, Unigreen PO.

He said: “In the face of ever greater concentration of demand, grouping smaller producers in this way strengthens the position of producers in the market and fosters a fairer distribution of value-added along the supply chain. It can make an immense difference towards helping improve the sustainability of the horticulture industry.”
