In what turned out to be a controversial campaign, Renaghan overcame Co Cavan dairy and beef farmer James Speares.

The final result was Nigel Renaghan 1,111 votes to James Speares' 787.

The Ulster/north Leinster constituency in the IFA covers counties Donegal, Longford, Cavan, Monaghan, Meath, Westmeath and Louth.

The following is the result from each of the counties.

  • Louth: Renaghan 82 votes - Speares 55 votes.
  • Westmeath: Renaghan 109 votes - Speares 29 votes.
  • Donegal: Renaghan 248 votes - Speares 111 votes.
  • Longford: Renaghan 88 votes - Speares 67 votes.
  • Meath: Renaghan 227 votes - Speares 111 votes.
  • Cavan: Renaghan 29 votes - Speares 379 votes.
  • Monaghan: Renaghan 328 votes - Speares 35 votes
  • Renaghan will take up the role following the IFA’s AGM in 2018.
