The Rodgers family secured the overall championship at last week’s Calf Spectacular.

Hosted by the Northern Ireland Young Limousin Breeders Club, the show was held on 28 December at Swatragh Mart. The event once again attracted some of Northern Ireland’s best breeders, with a strong show throughout the 12 classes of pedigree and commercial stock. Given the task of judging the event was the mother and daughter team of June Dowie and Jennifer Hyslop.

June has been showing and judging throughout the UK since 2004. She runs a herd of 200 suckler cows and 1,100 breeding ewes on the home farm in Dumfries and Galloway in Scotland.

Daughter Jennifer works as stockperson for the well-known Graham’s Herd in Stirling. This noted herd has enjoyed a remarkable year, culminating in taking the championship and top-priced lot at the Red Ladies sale in Carlisle earlier in December. Along with this, she has been showing since the age of 12, winning numerous top accolades.

Jennifer presided over nine individual pedigree classes before stepping out to her championship lineup.

After much deliberation, she awarded the overall pedigree championship to the Rodgers family’s Draperhill Orlando. This young bull is out of Fieldson Alfie son Slieve Leanardo, while the dam is homebred Draperhill Gina.

Close on his heels and claiming the reserve overall pedigree champion title was Jalex Ohyeah from well-known breeder James Alexander. The sire behind this stylish young bull was the herd’s stock bull Bassingfield Hobama, while the dam was Draperhill Joceyln.

June took the charge when it came to the commercial section and, after awarding her placings in the three classes, tapped out her champions. Claiming both the champion and reserve placings was JCB Commercials. Out in front was Candy Floss who is a daughter of NCBC bull Elite Ice Cream, while the reserve spot went to the steer champion Black Jack.

Throughout the show, the young handlers were judged on presentation, control, response, alertness and showing under real show conditions and pressure. Both judges carefully watched and together made selected Kile Diamond as the overall young handler champion. The two also awarded the Brooklands Peretual challenge cup to Lucy Rodgers for best homebred animal from a young breeder.
