The Irish Timber Growers Association (ITGA) has been working hand in hand with the timber supply chain to boost wood mobilisation, streamline sales and strengthen trust across our sector.
With more private forest owners now bringing timber to the market, especially since the windblow, ITGA has developed its template tree sales agreement and timber sales dispatch system, which are practical tools designed to make thinning, felling, selling and harvesting more efficient and more secure. These are essential, because:
A strong contract is your best safeguard, as it protects buyers and processors alike.Deposits and staged payments, linked to timber removal, provide certainty and fairness.ITGA’s template, certification-compliant and easy to adapt, gives clarity, structure and peace of mind.Ireland’s private forests are entering a major growth phase: roundwood output is forecast to climb from 4.7m m3 currently – not counting windblow – to reach 7.9m m3 by 2035. This increase creates an incredible opportunity, but only if growers and processors work together under recognised, trusted systems.
There is now an opportunity for these to work together to ensure this increase in timber supply from private forests is utilised. Similarly, there are benefits for sawmillers, timber processors, and wood energy markets as they will have a continued and consistent supply of roundwood to develop and build on their domestic and export successes.
Confidence in the marketplace with well-recognised systems and payment agreements are vital in mobilising this growing timber supply, which must be made as efficient as possible for all parties, so the maximum return can be achieved by forest owners and timber processors.
Clear payment agreements aren’t just paperwork, they are best practice. They offer security, and they’re the key to unlocking the full value of Ireland’s timber future.
