The increased throughput stems from greater demand for lambs ahead of the one-day Muslim festival, Eid-al-Adha, which took place on Monday of this week. Factory agents became more active in sourcing lambs with prices paid rising €4.60/kg to €4.70/kg to secure the required numbers. Imports from Northern Ireland also increased significantly, to 13,613 head.
Increased buying continued over the weekend and into Monday and Tuesday of this week. The trade settled yesterday, and although quotes remain low at €4.35.kg, farmers are securing deals of €4.55/kg to €4.60/kg with demand for lamb remaining firm in France.
This does not include lambs exported live, which are also reported as spiking this week.
