Leinster Marts manager Jimmy Walshe described the trade at last Saturday’s Borris Ewe Breeders Association premier sale of ewe hoggets and ewe lambs as nothing like he had ever seen before.
He said that the sale will long be remembered as “one of if not the best ever show and sale in both quality and trade”.
An entry of about 900 Suffolk x Cheviot-cross ewe hoggets recorded an electric trade with 35% of the sale entry ranging from €400 to a top of €515 per head, another 30% selling from €340 to €400 and the remaining 30% from €300 to €400 per head.
Hoggets were up by over €100 per head on the corresponding sale in 2024 where 47% of hoggets sold from €300 to €360 per head and another 45% from €265 to €295 per head.
Ewe lambs also sold in a sharp trade with the general run of prices for heavier lots ranging from €170 to €260 per head or from €5.20/kg to €5.80/kg liveweight.
A selection of excellent-quality lots breached the €6/kg mark including the top price pen of 52kg ewe lambs which sold for €300 each.
Jimmy said that buyers came as far away from Donegal, Westport, Clare and Kerry with a number of new buyers in attendance.
