The latest Bord Bia sheep price dashboard shows Spanish lamb overtaking the normal position held by France of recording the highest farmgate price among the main sheep-producing nations in Europe.
The Spanish lamb price of €9.16/kg is running 82c/kg higher than the corresponding period in 2024, while the French farmgate lamb price of €8.77/kg is running 39c/kg lower.
As detailed in Table 1, the French price is the only price listed to be running behind 2024 levels.
Australian sheep farmers are enjoying the greatest increase, with prices there averaging €6.32/kg, up €1.31/kg on 2024 levels. The increase is being fuelled by strong demand in export markets with the US market performing particularly strong.
New Zealand’s lamb price of €5.06/kg is running 90c/kg higher, with tight supplies underpinning higher prices.
The Irish farmgate price of €7.62/kg is running 45c/kg higher. This price excludes the flat-rate VAT top-up, which, when included, leaves average prices in the region of €8/kg.
Prices paid to farmers in Northern Ireland are slightly behind this at an average of €7.57/kg, up 37c/kg on the year, while British farmgate prices of €8.03/kg are 16c/kg higher.
