A series of three organic lamb finishing events, “From Farm to Fork,” will take place in three locations across the country. The events are designed for both organic and conventional sheep farmers who want to improve finishing performance and profitability.

The three events will take place on 5 August in Westport, Co Mayo, 11 August in Kenmare, Co Kerry and 12 August in Fenagh, Co Carlow.

The events will combine practical demonstrations with research and expert discussions. Highlights will include a demo of drafting lambs, latest research from Teagasc, financial analyses and a discussion forum.

The events are supported by Teagasc; the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine; Bord Bia; the Irish Organic Association; Organic Trust; IFA; ICM; ICSA; Leitrim Organic Farmers Co-Op; NOTS; OBLIG and INHFA.

The first event in Westport, Co Mayo, is hosted by Michael Holmes a organic farmer who combines commonage with enclosed grazing. A highlight of this event will include a live demonstration of weighing and grading lambs.

The event then moves to Kenmare Mart, Co Kerry, where a live demonstration of drafting lambs will take place to help farmers make more informed finishing decisions.

The final event of the series will take place on Joe Nolan’s farm in Fenagh, Co Carlow, where Joe farms a 98ha organic sheep and tillage enterprise. Since moving to organics, Joe has moved towards the easy-care breed of sheep.
