Shed support

Ivan Heskin from Cullenagh, Co Waterford, fed and watered 25 livery horses at home, in addition to helping secure a shed that had lost its roof at a neighbouring farm and clearing roads in the locality to allow neighbours get to the village.

Deja vu

James Heaney from Glenkeen, Clonaslee, was well prepared for Storm Emma, moving his sheep flock from the Slieve Bloom mountains in Co Laois ahead of the snow, just as he did in 1982 and with his father James Snr in 1947, another year of heavy snow.

Made up

Meath-based make-up artist Ann-Marie Walshe was transported in her sister’s fiancé’s John Deere tractor to help bride Elaine Doyle look her best for her marriage to Edwin Verhoeven at the Knightsbrook Hotel, Trim, at the height of Storm Emma.

Taxi service

In Cork, farmer Adrian Chambers operated a four-wheel-drive taxi service for his sister Michelle, sister-in-law Linda and her three children, as well as two nephews, his parents and neighbours.

Machinery movers

Both Atkins Machinery and Tom Shaw Farm Machinery Co Offaly, cleared the roads for Birr residents, the surrounding communities to allow first responders get to their calls. The Atkins crew ploughed snow all the way to the Kinnity Mountains.

Good neighbour

Lisa Nic Reamoin and her family were snowed in on their beef and sheep farm in Walshestown, Ballymurphy, Co Carlow, unable to reach their outfarm 6km away in Ullard, Co Kilkenny. Contractor John Fluskey stepped in to feed the cattle silage and nuts and checked their water.
