Bandon Mart had big numbers again for its weekly calf sale, but prices continue to soften as the season pushes on. Tommy Moyles reports on a sale where over 2,000 calves were on offer.
Calf prices continue to ease as marts report big numbers at calf sales across the country. Shippers have been especially active in recent weeks as sailing conditions improve.
After a quick rummage in the cow, I’d straightened out two bent front legs but I had an inkling it wasn’t going to be as simple as that.
February and early March saw a major recovery in cattle exports following a slow start to the year. While calf numbers have increased of late the numbers of older stock shipped remains well back.
Prices for Friesian bull calves were up again, as mart managers reported strong demand from exporters. Meanwhile, Angus-cross calves passed Friesians as the must numerous breed on offer at calf sales.
Live export buyers were active for Friesian bulls, with farmers and exporters competing for Angus, Hereford and Belgian Blue-cross calves.
