The first Save Our Sucklers mart demonstration got underway on Tuesday night this week, at Caarndonagh Mart, Co Donegal. The evening drew a huge crowd, with farmers coming from all over Co Donegal to support the Irish Farmers Journal and Irish Farmers Association event.

Over 350 farmers signed the petition in the mart on Tuesday evening.

The next demo took place at Cootehill Mart, Co Cavan, on Thursday evening, with more scheduled for next week in Mohill and Ennis. Clive Wasson

Farmer writes: Irish and Munster rugby player, CJ Stander

This week, our Farmer Writes went international with Munster and Ireland rugby player CJ Stander. CJ’s family runs a 1,200ac dairy and vegetable farm between George and Port Elizabeth in South Africa. The farm milks 450 cows and supplies Marks & Spencer with broccoli.

With temperatures reaching 40 degrees in the height of summer, irrigation is key on the farm and keeps the cows cool.

CJ explains that the biggest problem facing farmers in South Africa is drought, with the lack of rain and water driving up feed prices. Philip Doyle

William Hunter ploughing in Co Tipperary

William Hunter is a tillage farmer in Ballylooby, south Tipperary.

Earlier this week, William was ploughing his land in preparation for sowing spring barley.

William was using a Lemken slatted, five-furrow, reversible plough. In total, he has 80 acres of land for spring malting barley and 15 acres for oats. Ramona Farrelly

Noel Rogers in Co Cavan

Noel Rogers is a dairy farmer in Knockbride, Co Cavan.

He is currently halfway through his calving season, with the first half of the herd calving to AI and the remaining calvers set to calf to his Hereford bull.

One of Noel’s heifers has contracted mastitis, so he has called Tommy, his local vet from the Veterinary Centre Kingscourt. Philip Doyle

Nenagh Mart

The weekly sale at Nenagh Mart in Co Tipperary took place on Tuesday this week.

The sale saw 340 calves, with a strong demand in particular for Friesian bulls. Mike Hoare

Ennis Mart

The annual show and sale took place at Ennis Mart last Thursday.

A total of 800 head were on offer and trade was much improved on previous weeks, according to mart manager Martin McNamara. Mike Hoare

Dominic McAdam in Corlongford, Braddox, Co Monaghan

Dominic McAdam is a dairy farmer in Corlongford, Braddox, Co Monaghan.

He says spring is his favourite time of the year, as the days gets longer, the yard gets dryer and there is new life.

Finnian Farrell in Donore, Co Westmeath

Finnian Farrell is a dairy farmer in Donore, Co Westmeath.

He is in the midst of calving season, with a total of 100 cows to calve.
