The 2018 recommended lists of spring cereals varieties contain three new barely varieties. Gangway, Hacker and Limona are provisionally recommended and they all have a good package of straw, yield and disease resistance characteristics.

Gangway is the highest yielder on the list (106) with good straw but it would be on the later side of ripening date. It has very good resistance to mildew and net blotch with good resistance to rhyncho and brown rust. Grain size is average but it has good specific weight.

Hacker has a good yield rating of 102.

Straw is average length with good resistance to lodging but it is only moderately resistant to brackling. It is early maturing. It has very good resistance to mildew and good resistance to rhyncho, brown rust and net blotch. Grain size is on the small side but it has very good specific weight.

Limona also has a good yield rating of 102. Straw is similar to Gangway or Mickle and it is early maturing. It has very good resistance to mildew and net blotch, good resistance to rhyncho, but only moderately resistant to brown rust. Grain size is small, specific weight is average but screenings appear to be on the high side.

Five previously recommended varieties – KWS Irina, Mickle, Paustian, Propino and RGT Planet – are also recommended for 2018.
