The Dairygold tillage conference will take place on Friday 12 January. The theme of this year’s conference is building resilience into your tillage business.
Three top speakers will be present on the day and there will be a host of trade stands to view before and after the event.
Speakers on the day include head of agriculture at Bank of Ireland Eoin Lowry on mitigating risk, farmers William and Robert Coleman from Co Cork on improving their soil and crop management and Ciarán Collins of Teagasc on knowing your costs.
Eoin Lowry, head of agriculture at Bank of Ireland
Eoin will talk about the challenges and risks in modern-day farming, focusing on the tillage sector. He will look at commercial exposure that can develop and suggest ways that should be considered to mitigate these risks.
William and Robert Colman, tillage farmers, Kanturk, Co Cork
William and Robert have continued to adapt their farming system to meet challenges. They put a strong focus on soil health and are not afraid to change crop management. The Colemans also run a drystock enterprise.
Ciarán Collins, Teagasc tillage specialist
Ciarán will present on 'knowing your costs'. He will show figures on the costs involved in growing different crops and how important it is to get figures in place for the year ahead.
Malting barley competition
The winner of the Dairygold malting barley competition will be announced at the conference. The 2023 season was extremely difficult to get malting barley to meet specifications.
A huge number of growers across the country did not get their barley to pass, so the award is a great achievement this season.
Four regional finalists were already announced:
The finalists will now be judged on their farming practices, with a particular focus on their farm’s sustainability.
The Dairygold tillage conference takes place on Friday 12 January at 2pm in Corrin Event Centre, Fermoy, Co Cork.
Trade stands will open at 12pm on the day of the conference and speakers will begin at 2pm.
