Approval for the potato sprout suppressant active chlorpropham (CIPC) has failed to be renewed.

The news was confirmed in a document published today by the European Commission named Implementing Regulation (EU) 2019/989.

CIPC has been undergoing a routine review in Europe since 2015 and the industry had known for some time of this impending outcome.

The withdrawal period for products containing CIPC from shelves has been set at 8 January 2020 for all member states.

Grace period

The regulation also outlines that any grace period granted by member states for the use, storage and disposal of CIPC shall be as short as possible and shall expire by 8 October 2020 at the latest.

It still remains unclear as to the potential future maximum residue levels which may be set after the withdrawal period.

CIPC remains the mainstay potato sprout suppressant active used in the storage of processing varieties.
