Harvesting made considerable progress in the past week with the help of better weather. With the bulk of the winter barley now harvested, the general good yield trend has continued. Yields are up around the 4t/ac mark at under 20% moisture. Farm averages for winter barley appear to range from about 3.5t/ac to 4.7t/ac.
Harvesting has moved on to winter oats, where the majority of crops are currently yielding either side of 4t/ac at moistures ranging from 16% to 20%.
Grain quality is generally good all around. While a small amount of the winter barley crop had specific weight below 60KPH, many merchants report that the dry crop is generally 68KPH to 70KPH.
Specific weights on oats are generally good also, with most intakes reporting in the 54KPH to 56 KPH bracket. However, it would appear that a few areas have disappointing specific weights, with readings generally under 50KPH.
Winter oilseed rape harvesting is well under way also, with most yield reports in the 1.7t/ac to 2.2t/ac bracket and the 8.8% to 11% moisture range.
Malting barley harvesting has commenced also. There are no solid yields to report but quality is described as excellent, with proteins generally in the 8.5% to 10% bracket. The winter-planted varieties are now almost all cut and grain quality is very good. Yields of the varieties planted ranged from 3.3t/ac to 4.5t/ac.
Winter wheat harvesting has begun also but moistures were high and cutting stopped. And the first of the spring oats may be cut next week also.
