Having headed the loose jumping line up at the RDS two weeks ago, William Buckley’s Capa Quadilou topped the premier three-year-old returns at Cavan last week. The gelding OBOS Quality changed hands for €23,500 and is headed for the Athlone yard of Jim Derwin. This was one of three to exceed €20,000, contributing to a clearance of 62% (52% in 2018) and an average of €8,026 (€6,672).

The sale topper is out of the Tinkas Boy mare Dilou M, who hails from a strong line of both jumpers and eventers.

Co Clare vendor Eileen Kelly also received a good return, when her gelding Lislan Diarado made €23,000. Well presented at the sale by Jill Revill and sold to Emma Jackson on behalf of Glenpatrick Sport Horses, the bay is out of the Askoll Defi Platiere-sired mare Lislan Kate, who is a half-sister to the CSI4* show jumper Lislan Flamenco.

Noel Ruane’s Castle Romanoff by Sligo Candy Boy out of Riverqueen (Varo) made the final major price of the session, selling for €21,000. Fourth behind the sale topper at the RDS and impressing on the night, he was bred in Co Sligo by Elena Gladka, and was secured by Gabriel Tunney acting for Philippines-based Jones Lanza.

The prices for the remainder were inconsistent, ranging from €3,000 upwards. Austin Quigley’s Clarkes Rolling On, bred by John Clarke, sold for €15,000 to an eventing ‘cash’ customer from Warwickshire. The gelding is by Creevagh Ferro out of the Ard VDL Douglas-sired mare Clarks Noble and Majestic.

Jim Derwin remained busy accounting for Frank Casey’s unnamed Contendro I gelding (dam by Guidam) at €13,800.

British event rider Oliver Townend diverted to Cavan when en-route to Millstreet. He took a liking to both Martin Murphy’s top-priced filly by Good Fellow VDL (dam by Ultimo) at €12,000 and to the Howleys’ Sligo Just Touch by Sligo Candy Boy (dam by Touchdown) at €10,000. He was enthusiastic about both commenting: “I think they are among the nicest three-year-olds I have ever bought.”

PERFORMANCE SALE

In contrast, Thursday’s performance sale was a more subdued affair, although it concluded with a good clearance of 69% (71% in 2018) and a modest average of €3,157 (€3,673).

The top bid of €8,200 came when event rider Emma Jackson secured Michael Quinlivan’s homebred Diego Future Trend, a gelding by Future Trend, out of Rossa Vivendi (Ars Vivendi).

Heading the older horse division was Jessica Burke’s home-bred mare CHF Super Classe by Classe VDL (dam by Ramiro B) sold to Andrew Bonelli for €6,700.

The pony trade was lively, with the best return of €6,400 falling to Sean Gormally’s 13-year-old show jumping pony Amigo – a proven individual carrying 224 SJI points.
