The UCD Agricultural Science Society students recently handed over a donation of €60,000 to their two chosen charities, 22q11 Ireland and Pieta House.

Last year the society raised €50,000 for charity.

The money was raised by UCD's agriculture students volunteering their own time, through both social and educational events, coupled with a number of fundraising drives.

The main events of the year were a charity boxing night titled “Ags vs Vets”, the renowned “Ag Week”, and a monster raffle with a pedigree Limousin heifer up for grabs.

The primary objective of the society is to provide an opportunity for students with a common interest to make friends and build networks while studying at UCD.

This is one of the largest sums of money ever raised by the Agricultural Society – a significant achievement, according to society auditor Peter Thomas Keaveney.

Keaveney said: “It was a really enjoyable and truly rewarding experience. On behalf of the society I would like to say a huge thanks to anyone that contributed or supported us in any way including the students and our sponsors.

"I would also like to thank the committee members for all their hard work. Without all of their support none of this would have been possible. In addition, I would like to wish the incoming committee all the best for next year.”

22q11 Ireland was chosen as the main charity this year and received a donation of €50,000, the highest sum the charity has ever received. Pieta House also received a donation of €10,000 to aid them in the great work they carry out.
