While many students know from a young age that they are interested in studying agricultural science, choosing which specific subject area you would like to specialise in while completing your CAO form can be a challenge.
In response to such comments, University College Dublin (UCD) has reconfigured its 2021 CAO entry system, providing students with more choice and time to select their preferred programme at UCD’s School of Agriculture and Food Science.
Each of the following 11 agricultural science specialisations will now be accessible through just one CAO code, which you may want to take note of (Agricultural Science DN250):
Agricultural systems technology.Agri-environmental sciences.Animal and crop production.Animal science.Animal science equine.Crop science.Dairy business.Food and agribusiness management.Food business with Chinese studies.Forestry.Horticulture.There are also separate CAO entry codes for Food Science (DN261) and Human Nutrition (DN262).
What does this mean for your CAO application?
For example, you could now choose ‘DN250 Agricultural Science’ on your CAO application and pending an offer onto the agricultural science programme, you have until the end of your first college year to choose your specialisation.
Equally, if students know the specialised area that they would like to pursue before they commence their studies at UCD, they can nominate their preferred programme when completing their CAO application.
New Crop Science degree programme
Another noteworthy update for all UCD aspiring entrants is the introduction of the new crop science degree programme. Application to this programme is via CAO code DN250 agricultural science.
This exciting new specialisation is the only third level crop science degree programme offered in Ireland. With an increasing demand for highly qualified graduates in the area of crop agronomy, graduates from this programme will be qualified to address a skills shortage highlighted in this sector.
The crop science course will focus on the science, production and management of crops and will also address the growing responsibility for the tillage sector with regards to climate change.
