Currently biomethane is much more expensive than natural gas

In 2019, the Irish Bioenergy Association (IrBEA) and Cré published our policy paper Mobilising an Irish Biogas Industry with Policy and Action. This document clearly identified the supports needed to mobilise a biogas industry. We are aware that small steps need to be taken before a greater vision for the biogas industry can be realised.
Bridge the gap
A support is required to bridge the gap between the production cost of biomethane and the price of fossil gas to make biomethane production economically viable.

To provide clarity, the Government needs to urgently confirm that a support scheme will be put in place for biomethane injection, including a projected timeline and budget. This will provide certainty to farmers who can supply feedstock and the plant developers of these medium/large-scale co-operative-style plants.
Planning
For those who have proposals for plants, we strongly advise against incurring any expenses or progressing with planning permission applications until clarity on support is provided.
Farmers and the industry are ready and the mobilisation of an Irish biogas industry lies firmly in the hands of the Government and key policymakers.
