Monday

It will be a cloudy start to the week, with patchy rain and drizzle, Met Éireann has said. Conditions will remain mainly dry with sunshine in most areas in the afternoon.

A few scattered showers will develop mainly in the west and northwest coastal counties. Maximum temperatures will range from 14°C to 17°C.

Monday night will be mostly dry, with long clear spells and isolated showers. Lowest temperatures will range from 4°C to 8°C. Mist and fog patches are likely to form towards dawn.

Tuesday

A generally dry day is forecast for Tuesday, with sunny spells. Cloud will increase in the west, bringing some isolated showers and a band of heavier rainfall later in the evening. Highest temperatures will range from 13°C to 15°C.

By night, Tuesday will be wet and windy, with persistent rain along the Atlantic coastline. Rain will be heaviest in the southern half of the country, with lows of 9°C to 12°C.

Wednesday

There will be a wet and blustery start to Wednesday, as rain continues to move eastwards. Heavy and frequent showers will continue to feed across the country from the Atlantic, with highs of 12°C to 15°C.

By night, Wednesday will bring showers and longer spells of rain in the west while becoming mainly dry elsewhere. Lowest temperatures will range from 2°C to 6°C.

Thursday

Scattered showers are set to continue in the west on Thursday. Rain will become more widespread during the afternoon and may merge to give longer spells of rain.

It will be cool, with highest temperatures of just 10°C to 13°C.

Friday

Friday will be a cool and fresh day with sunny spells. Further spells of rain and showers will be mostly in the north and east of the country. There will be highs of 8°C to 12°C in light to moderate breezes.

Farming forecast

Rain

Rainfall over the past week has generally been near or below average. Although there is some uncertainty for later next week, it is expected to be very unsettled.

Above normal rainfall amounts have been predicted, around 1.5 to 2 times the average for the time of year.

Temperatures

Average air temperatures have been roughly 2°C below normal over much of the country. Although it was milder for a time from Sunday, cool weather will return during the coming week.

Air temperatures are expected to remain between 2°C to 3°C below normal. Mean soil temperatures in contrast have generally been 1°C to 2°C above, but are now likely to fall closer to average.

Sunshine

Sunshine amounts have been above normal for much of the country over the last seven days, ranging from around 100% to 180%.

With unsettled weather coming next week from Tuesday night, sunshine levels are expected to be closer to or below normal.

Drying conditions

Conditions will be best in the east, where the longest hours of sunshine will be, although winds will be light. Drying will be poor initially on Monday due to rain.

Field conditions

Soils are generally below saturation across the country, with only poorly drained soil in parts being saturated. Soils in the south are driest, with soil moisture deficits of 15mm to 20mm.

With rainfall expected over the coming week, soils will become saturated throughout the country.
